Professor Ram Punjwani Appreciated

From: Lal Gehi

Waaha Saaeen Dr. Agha sahib,

You brought back my old memories of Saaen Prof. Ram Punjwani.

Ajju pinrn akhriyoon, sajarna panhijaa saariyaa
galana taan ggorhani joon, boondoon basi na kani
sandhii sika a sajjirani, loka ditthe na lahe ( Shah Latif Sahib )

[today too my eyes, looked for my companions
the tears in my eyes, do not stop flowing
the longing for my companions, will not cease till I meet my compatriots]

Professor Ram Panjwani used to have Chokis like that in his home in
Qreshi Mahal in
Mahim, Bombay, on every Monday, I attended most of them.

I remember, people used to sit on the stairs of his house, and listen to
his kalams of Sindhi Sufi Masters.
He always prayed and said "Saaeen panhinjhi halandi halaej,"
When he says "Shala ka panwandue baajha " I see my poor Sindhis of
Sindh, with a jholii, and
asking for the end of their sufferings and sufferings of Sindh.! Shalla
Lal Saaeen Mahar a kare.!

I would like to hear some recordings of Master Chandur, also, if you
have an access to them.
Thank you, for your valuable contribution.

Professor Ram Panjwani [pron. Raamu Panjuvaarnii] was an embodiment
of Sindhiyat and one of the leading lights of Sindh in the 20th
century. I have posted his last sufi music concert [chonkii]:

http://yangtze.cs.uiuc.edu/~agha/panjwani_akhirii_chonkii_A.mp3
http://yangtze.cs.uiuc.edu/~agha/panjwani_akhirii_chonkii_B.mp3

the files are about 35 MBytes each (30 minutes of music interspered with
brief commentary) and can be downloaded and saved.

The great scholar, sufi, follower of the ancient Sindhi way, passed
away from the mortal world the day after he gave this concert. It is
clear from his what he says that he knew his life in this world was
coming to an end. The concert thus includes his last testament and
message to the Sindhi people. It speaks to his abiding faith in
Sindhi civilization and his hopes for its future.
