Soc, Her: Sammelan Confusion

Dear Friends,

Returning home after an absence of 2-3 weeks, I note with some concern
the discussion on the above topic.

While appreciating the wish of the organizers to have some focus, I
fail to understand how participation of Sindhi Muslims would detract
from it. As I understand it, the Sammelan is a social and cultural
gathering and not a political or religious one. Although a culture
includes religion, it at the same time also transcends it. Sindhi
culture would be hollow without Shah, Sachal or Saami. I have yet to
attend a Sindhi cultural function without rendition of kalams from
Shah and / or Sachal.

Instead of discouraging Sindhi Muslims from attending, we should
cordially invite them and make them feel very welcome. We share with
them our common heritage and because of their numbers, they are the
ones who will keep it alive. In the best tradition of Sindhiayat, let
us rise above religious divisions. And after all, our Sindhi religion
is Sufism which imbibes both Hindu and Muslim values.

Talking about youngsters, Sammelan is an opportunity to introduce them
to our roots. They are more tolerant and inclusive than we tend to
credit them. They would love Rumi in English and exactly the same
thought by Shah in Sindhi if presented to them nicely. This the real
challenge!

I am certain wiser counsels will prevail!
