At the time of independence
about 64 MAF of water was being utilized
annually in the irrigation canals in the country. With the
construction of more barrages, link canals, and storage dams, water
uses have increased to an average of 106 MAF. Under the Indus Water
Accord, 117.35 MAF have been allocated to the provinces which will be
utilized after some on-going schemes are completed, and the area in
the command of recently completed schemes is fully developed. It
must be noted that with the continuous increase in water use
development, the reliability of balance water has been progressively
on the decrease, and at present surplus water is available only in
high flow years.
